Long ago, in the State of Chu there was a man who raised monkeys. He was very fond of monkeys, so he reared a large number of them. He understood the monkeys very well, and the monkeys also understood him. In order to satisfy the monkeys' appetites, he reduced the amount of food for his own family. Soon afterwards, there came a time when his family didn't have enough to eat, so he decided to cut down on the food given to the monkeys. But he was afraid that the monkeys would not obey him. Therefore, he decided to trick them: "If I gave you three chestnuts in the morning and four in the evening, would that be enough?" The monkeys were furious and refused to accept his proposal. A short while later, he asked, "If I gave you four chestnuts in the morning and three in the evening, would that be enough?" At this the monkeys rolled around on ground, happily agreeing to the proposal.
