Translation:
During the eigth month in mid-autumn the wind roared in rage, carrying away three layers of thatch from the top of my cottage, the the thatch flew across the river and scattered on the river's banks, the top layer hung on the branches of trees, the bottom layers floated and sank into ponds. The boys from the southern village took advantage of my old age and lack of strength, unable to resist the temptation they became thieves, openly snatching the thatch through the bamboo groves, while with cracked lips and parched tongue I hollered at them to no avail, only to return home leaning upon my cane and sighing to myself. Soon the wind stopped and the clouds turned an inky black, the autumn day extended into the dark evening. The quilt blanket of many years was as cold as iron, my darling son slept in discomfort and tore the covers. From the front of the bed to the dark corners of the house there was no place that was dry, the rain splashed down like pins and needles without end. Having experienced war and turmoil I slept very little, how could I persevere through the long and wet night? Wishing one could get thousands of large and tall buildings, protect the world's scholars from the cold and let them be merry, not bothered by the wind and rain and be as stable as a mountain. Humph! When would those kinds of shelter tower in sight before my eyes, so that I would still feel content even though my cottage broke down and I alone froze to death!
