Mountains surround the Chu Province. Toward southwest there are a multitude of peaks, the forest gully is spectacularly beautiful. Looking luxuriant yet profoundly elegant, it is the Lang Ya Mountain. Six or seven miles up the mountain, gradually one hears the sounds of flowing water, and flowing swiftly between two peaks, it is the Niang Spring. The road back revolves around the peak, there is a winged pavilion overlooking the spring, it is the Zui Weng Pavilion. Who built the pavilion? The mountain monks say it was a wise Immortal. Who named the pavilion? The Chief of Guards had spoken about it himself. The Chief of Guards and his guest would come here to drink, becoming intoxicated after a few cups of undiluted wine, and by his age he was the oldest (person among them), thus calling himself by the title of 'Zui Weng' (Drunken Old Man). The original meaning of 'Zui Weng' did not have anything to do with wine, but was determined by the mountains and rivers. The joy of the mountains and rivers, it intoxicated the heart like fine wine.

As the sun rises the forest mist scatters, clouds return and there are dark rock caves, with darkness and brightness appearing together, like morning and evening amidst the mountains. Wild scented grasses give off a deep fragrance, beautiful trees stand up elegantly while providing shade, wind and frost are clear, water flows among protruding rocks, all throughout the four seasons in the mountains. In the morning he (Chief of Guards) leaves, in the evening he returns, the four season's sceneries are not the same, there are endless amusements to be found.

As for laborers singing along the path, travelers resting under trees, people in front calling out, people behind them responding, elders bent with age traveling along with children holding on to them, the comings and goings never end, as the Chu Province's people go sightseeing. Facing a creek full of fishes, the creek is deep and the fishes are fat; the Niang Spring becomes wine, the spring is sweet and the wine pure; there are vegetables growing in the mountains, they were mixed into a salad and put on display, becoming the Chief of Guards' banquet. For amusement during the feasting and drinking, there were no music of stringed instruments or bamboo flutes, but it consisted of throwing arrows (into a jar), playing checkers and winning, among the crisscross of wine jars and cups, people standing and sitting creating a hullabaloo, with a multitude of visitors feeling happy. Looking old with his white hair, and decadently falling down amidst them, the Chief of Guards lie in a drunken state.

Soon the sunset came upon the mountains, scattering the people's shadows, the Chief of Guards departed and the guests followed as well. The forest is now dark, filled with the cries of birds from above and below, the visitors had left and the birds rejoice. Though the birds understand the joy of mountains and forest, nevertheless they do not understand the joy of people; the people are happy while traveling with the Chief of Guards. They did not know that the Chief of Guards' happiness comes from their happiness. While intoxicated he is able to share in their joy, when sober he is able to write an essay to record the event, since he is the Chief of Guards. Who is the said Chief of Guards, but Lu Ling's Ou Yang Xiu.
