Introduction to indefinite articles.

This lesson is about the use of indefinite articles in Chinese.

Amy: 我是一个老师.
Jane: 我是一个学生.

When referring to animals, the indefinite article '一只' is usually used.

Cat: 我是一只猫.

Lesson 4 Review:
A teacher - 一个老师 (yī gè lǎo shī)
A student - 一个学生 (yī gè xué shēng)
A cat - 一只猫 (yī zhī māo)

Notes:
Both '一个' and '一只' can be translated in English to the indefinite articles "a" and "an".

'一个' is often used to refer to a person while the indefinite article '一只' is usually used to refer to animals. However, there are some exceptions, for example:
A horse: 一匹马 (yī pǐ mǎ)
A dog: 一条狗 (yī tiáo gǒu)
A cow: 一头牛 (yī tóu níu)

The Chinese characters '只' and '个' are measure words (also known as classifiers).

The characters 我是 means "I am".
